Computer Activists Aid Hacked N.Z. Charity Web Site - Philanthropy ...

Members of the ?hacktivist? collective known as Anonymous have come to the aid of a New Zealand Internet site that was vandalized while raising money to feed hungry children, according to the New Zealand Herald and the BBC.

Bryan Bruce, a documentary filmmaker, posted a message on Facebook about the hacking of his Web site, Redsky, from which he sells DVDs of his films and donates a portion of the proceeds to an anti-hunger charity. He said a friend who saw the post passed it along to members of Anonymous, who within a day traced the attack to a man in Madrid.

The computer group is best known for online protest actions, such as attacking the Web sites of the FBI and major entertainment-industry organizations over the closure of a file-sharing site.

The Redsky hacker ? who in a message on Mr. Bruce?s site identified himself as ?@AnonVoldemort? ? was apparently trying to impress the hackers? group so he would be invited to join, but instead he violated an unwritten Anonymous rule against attacking charity sites.

?I?m not going to make comment about what they do in other areas, but this was a real Robin Hood thing,? Mr. Bruce said of the Anonymous intervention. ?They just decided this was not good. It?s extraordinary.?
