Pixlr Express Makes Editing and Correcting Your Photos on the Go Easy

Pixlr Express Makes Editing and Correcting Your Photos on the Go Easy Android/iOS: Made by the same team behind Pixlr-o-Matic, one of your favorite photo filter apps, Pixlr Express takes a different approach to personalizing your photos. Namely, it packs in the editing, color correction, and tweaking options so you spend less time with filters and more time improving the final photo.

A number of you called out Pixlr Express as another great Instagram alternative for Android, noting its editing features are more powerful than its more popular cousin. It's not new, but it does have some notable tools under the hood: One-touch red eye correction, teeth whitening, focal blur, denoising, sharpening, and more are available, along with standards like crop/rotate/resize options. You can even tap the "auto fix" button and the app will take care of your shot for you, adjusting for low-light levels or oversaturated colors. You can always revert its changes, or hop in and adjust them manually feature-by-feature.

If you must add filters and borders to your photos, Pixlr Express can help you there too. The app packs several of each so you can personalize your photo before sharing. If you'd rather do more granular adjustments and editing, the app supports that as well: you can zoom in on your photos and use the app's brush tool to apply colors, tweaks, or any other edits to specific areas of a photo only. It's free, and available now for iOS and Android devices.

The Telegraph: Midstate college looks to be hub for UAS technology

On an ordinary Monday morning, most college students sit droopy-eyed in lecture halls, chugging coffee and scribbling notes while a professor lectures in front of a PowerPoint presentation.

But a handful of students at one Middle Georgia campus spent a recent Monday gathered around a rocket-shaped device that is often used in classified, groundbreaking projects ? and can fly without an onboard pilot.

Most people would call the device a drone. Professionals prefer to call it an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or UAV. But at Middle Georgia College?s aviation campus, most refer to this particular UAV as PTERA ? the first drone of its type that was tested in the United States. Students and faculty tested PTERA under the direction of NASA.

?That hasn?t been done to our knowledge,? said Chad Dennis, a program coordinator with the Georgia Centers of Innovation for Aerospace, with an office on Middle Georgia College?s Eastman campus.

UAVs are a rarity on college campuses, but they are becoming more common at Middle Georgia College and, if Dennis has his way, they will soon play a bigger academic role. Dennis has spent the past year developing a UAV degree program ? specifically an Unmanned Aerial Certification program. If approved by the Board of Regents, the new Middle Georgia State College would be one of few U.S. institutions that offer a UAV program. Middle Georgia State College will form in January with the consolidation of Middle Georgia College and Macon State College.

Additionally, Dennis is working to position Georgia as one of six UAV test sites in the nation. In January, the Federal Aviation Administration established regulations that would allow UAVs to fly commercially by 2015. But to fly commercially, the machines need to be tested. So, the FAA decided it needs six test sites, and Dennis wants to make sure Georgia is one of them.

And, in a field near the tiny downtown of Eastman in Dodge County, the future Middle Georgia State College?s aviation campus would be the Georgia headquarters for that national test site.

?The newest technology, tested by us,? he said.

In December, Middle Georgia College snagged a certificate of authorization from the FAA to fly and test a UAV called the Twin Star II. It?s a significant achievement as FAA authorizations are not easy to obtain. It?s the college?s second one for UAV technology, with three more expected to be approved by May. There are only 400 such authorizations in the nation.

Students can still build and work on UAVs without an authorization. They can fly them while tethered, but they cannot truly test the UAV?s ?brain? ? a tiny box the size of an iPhone that drives the machine while the human pilot stands on the ground ? without the green light from the FAA.

That green light is what Dennis spends much of his time trying to procure. It?s a lengthy process. Students and teachers simulate a UAV flight, performing the simulated tests over and over until all risks are ruled out. When Dennis applies for an FAA authorization, he submits an application that?s an average of 25 pages, complete with links to more information.

?It explains to them every step of the procedure,? he said, ?all the way down to if somebody gets snakebit out there, this is how we?re going to handle it.?

Administrators are quick to explain that many think of UAVs as military tools. But they are beginning to be used for much more, such as NASA projects.

When the college tested PTERA in July, it relayed its findings to NASA, which wanted to know whether PTERA was a viable aircraft. The space center is very interested in robotic technology as a means to push the boundaries of space exploration, Dennis said.

Students, faculty and staff built PTERA ? through a partnership with Area-I, a Georgia-based UAV research and development company ? and tested it at the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport. They flew it using a remote control, proving it can fly better than anticipated. During the next phase of testing, students and teachers will allow the device to start flying itself.

With its newest authorization, the college hopes to assist in agricultural breakthroughs. Students will hover over local fields using a UAV, which will scan each crop to determine whether it needs to be sprayed. Instead of spraying the entire field, farmers can apply pesticides to the plants that need it, saving time and money. It?s an example of how the college hopes to boost agriculture through UAV technology.

?A UAV could get right on top of the crops ? imaging the plants and determining which ones need spraying,? Dennis said. ?Farmers are very excited about this project.?

But the UAV projects don?t come cheap, and they receive no school funds from tuition dollars. But they do get money from companies that contract with them, as well as grants from organizations, such as the Georgia Centers of Innovation for Aerospace. The agriculture project landed a few thousand dollars from the state peanut and cotton commissions, which are interested in the results. The local development authority and farmers also are interested in offering support, Dennis said.

?Without them ? there wouldn?t be anyway we could do it,? he said. ?Everybody?s really coming to the table. ? Farmers are really excited about this project.?

Organizations that want to test UAVs often turn to outside sources, such as Middle Georgia College?s program. The UAV tests not only benefit organizations, such as NASA and farms, but they also give students practical experience, Dennis said.

When Michael Mendez moved to Georgia from New York, he switched from studying music to his newfound love of helicopters. Soon, he accepted an internship working with UAVs on Middle Georgia College?s campus. Now, the junior plans to make a career out of UAV assembling and testing.

?I?ve never been involved in anything so intricate,? he said. ?This is a whole new world for me. I?m all about it. ? I can?t get enough of it, really.?

Jill Brooke: Nora Ephron Taught Us How to Live and Die

In reflecting on all the people who passed away this year, I am thinking of Nora Ephron and how this witty, wise and loving woman taught us not only how to live but also how to die.

I last saw Nora Ephron earlier this year at the memorial for best-selling author Charla Krupp, who shocked her circle of loyal devoted friends by never divulging her terminal illness. While Nora was behind me as we signed our names on the guest book, a few friends, with tear rimmed eyes, came up to us questioning how anyone could keep a terminal illness secret or would want to make that choice. "We live in the age of the Internet where everyone tells everyone everything," cried one friend.

"The credit should go to a good marriage," I said, referring to Charla's partnership to Time magazine's theater critic Richard Zoglin. "How lucky was she that her husband's love was enough that she didn't need anyone else."

I then turned to Nora and for some inexplicable reason said, "Don't you agree?" In owl-like black sunglasses, the celebrated writer of romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally nodded her head and whispered, "That is so true." Only now I realize she most likely was thinking of her own husband, writer Nick Pileggi, whose quiet unwavering support gave her the protective cocoon to keep her secret intact -- even from her children.

As Frank Rich wrote in his New York Magazine piece about Ephron, people have legitimate reasons to want to keep pending death a secret. He said his friend may have not wanted "her illness to change the weather in any room she entered. She did not want to spend every day fending off an onslaught of concerned questions. She didn't want to be thought of as a lesser person. She did not want friends to see her falling apart."

Rich went on to share how at Ephron's memorial in New York City, her son Max Bernstein reflected on his mother's unexpected gift for not divulging the seriousness of her illness.

"I think that she just kept quiet so the rest of us could keep enjoying being with her as much as possible," Max said at the memorial. "All of those moments would have been bittersweet or sanctimonious, flanked by an asterisk, leading to a footnote that says, "There aren't many of these left." Then he added, "I am so glad they weren't that way."

But it couldn't have been that way for Max or his brother Jacob without Nora's husband Nick Pileggi by her side. Yes, this man who she married in 1987 was a good fella in the best of ways.

As a culture, we often focus on the lust and laughs of new marriages. But want to see passion at its sexiest? For me, it is witnessing the long-term marriages of couples whose passion for loyalty and the respect for their history together endures so that each spouse can feel safe and not judged during times of weakness. Long term marriages are the real love stories of our time. Just wish there were more of them.

Lucky Nora had Nick to discuss the challenges of squeezing joy from life with rationed time. She had him to give her the chicken soup when treatments made her sick and cranky. She had him to cry with at night when the fear of the unknown choked her with anxiety. Nora had Nick to soothe her apprehensions so her public face could still be smiling. So she could still be working. So she could still be living the life she wanted. So she could be, as she often said, "the heroine of your life, not the victim."

Friends of course lamented not being able to say farewell. But as Bruce Feiler wrote in the New York Times, farewell conversations are usually awkward and forced. What do you say after goodbye? Sorry this happened and it sucks? As I've witnessed, the dying often feel obligated to make their friends feel better about their condition. It becomes stressful for them. They only feel safe with a trusted few.

Oddly enough, Nora Ephron, the woman who eagerly doled out delicious recipes for Thanksgiving dinners, never did share the one recipe many covet: The recipe for a loving devoted marriage. With the divorce rate hovering towards 50 percent, few will have built a reservoir of good times to not need anyone else when the end of life comes.

In fact one of Nora Ephron's greatest successes ends up proving not only that in divorce, wife can go on, but that she can marry well too.

Refill Your Travel Toothpaste Bottles with a DIY Adapter

Refill Your Travel Toothpaste Bottles with a DIY AdapterTravel-sized toiletries are often more expensive relative to their normal-sized counterparts. Reader ungullible shares a trick for refilling your travel-sized toothpaste bottles.

When we noted that children-sized toothpaste was TSA-compatible, ungullible shared an even cheaper solution: buy one travel-sized bottle and refill it.

I took two flip-top toothpaste lids, cut off the lids, and glued the top openings together to create a refill adapter. So now when my travel sized toothpaste tube gets empty, I use my adapter to connect the travel tube to my full-sized tube, squeeze, and refill.

We couldn't get ungullible to respond with a picture, but it's pretty easy to see what this would look like: two flip-top lids detached from their tubes and glued together at the "mouth." With some finagling, you could probably refill any toothpaste tube without an "adapter," but this trick would certainly make the process easier.

Geminid meteor shower reigns in the night sky (+video)

Geminid meteor shower: Last night's annual meteor shower was a crowd pleaser. The Gemind meteor shower comes from debris shed by a 3-mile-wide? asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

By Mike Wall,?Space.com / December 14, 2012

The annual Geminid meteor shower peaked overnight last night (Dec. 13), dazzling skywatchers around the world with a bounty of brilliant shooting stars.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

Renters Are Damaged By Foreclosures Too | Boise Real Estate Blog

Renters are oft-overlooked victims of foreclosure.

A recent study by the National Law Center On Homelessness and Poverty points out that roughly 20% of all foreclosed properties are rental properties.

Visualize this:

You are a renter who has signed a one-year lease, put up a substantial security deposit, moved in, and think you?re all settled for the next twelve months.

Then, two months into your lease, you learn that the property you?re renting just went into foreclosure.

Or, worse, you learn that the property was already in foreclosure when you signed the lease.

Another few months pass, and a sheriff?s deputy knocks on your front door and tells you that you must leave within three days.

You have to move, your deposit is gone, and the landlord has pocketed your rent while not making mortgage payments.

It?s not fair, but it can happen.

Renters in these circumstances are innocent victims and vulnerable through no fault of their own.

Before you sign that lease, check the public records ?and confirm that a notice of default has not been recorded against the property you want to rent.

That will, at least, confirm that the property is not in foreclosure proceedings when you sign the lease.

You can do this by contacting your county recorder?s office in most locales.

Hillary Clinton to return to work next week

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A homeless woman was in critical condition in a Los Angeles hospital after a man doused her with liquid accelerant and set her on fire as she slept on a bus bench, police said on Thursday. Officers arrested Dennis Petillo, 24, in connection with the early morning attack, and he has been booked in jail on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. The woman, whose name has not been released, was being treated at a local hospital with burns all over her body, said Los Angeles police Lieutenant Damian Gutierrez. ...

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

Consumer Debt Rises to Record Levels as 2012 Comes to a Close ...

By John Clark

Total consumer borrowing rose to $2.75 trillion towards the end of 2012, which represents a record amount of debt, according to a report from the New York Times.

Figures released last week by the Federal Reserve show that consumers increased their borrowing by $14.2 billion in the early days of winter, signaling an increase in consumer health but portending possible financial troubles in 2013.

The numbers represent a mixed bag for consumers. On one hand, access to credit appears to have improved over the past year. On the other hand, rising levels of debt could lead to another jump in the number of people filing for bankruptcy protection.

Credit Card Debt and Student Loans Lead Spike in Borrowing

According to sources, the primary forms of borrowing that led the recent spike included credit card debt, student loans, and car loan.

In the category of debt that includes student and car loans, sources say that borrowing increased by a remarkable $10.8 billion. In addition, credit card debt increased by $3.4 billion, as consumers increased their credit card spending for only the second time in the last five months.

Analysts say the rise in credit card debt was particularly surprising, given the reluctance of most consumers to use their credit cards in the wake of the recent recession.

Sources note that credit cards usually have higher interest rates than other types of loans. As a result, when the economy goes south, many shoppers turn towards other types of loans.

For the last few years, consumers have followed this theory, cutting their credit card spending dramatically. This October, for example, the total amount of credit card debt was 17 percent lower than the same figure in 2008. But total credit card debt still saw a relative jump in the latter part of 2012.

Rise in Debt Accompanied by Decrease in Consumer Spending

Despite the rise in overall debt, consumers are still spending less than they did in the days before the recession struck, according to financial analysts.

Sources pose a few reasons for this dip. First, many shoppers may be cutting back on their spending because they fear potential tax increases in the early part of 2013. If Congress fails to reach an agreement with President Obama on a budget deal, these fears could prove valid.

In addition, sources note that Hurricane Sandy, which devastated several eastern states, played a significant role in lowering consumer spending. And as those states recover from the terrible storm, many experts believe consumer spending will slowly rise to normal levels.

Social Networking ? Japan Sociology

by Julia Helbing

?Social networking ? it?s the way the 21st century is communicating today!??(WISN 2011)

A social network is a social structure of individuals or organizations. You can find them between people, like families and friends, but you can also find them using the internet on for example social networking sites.

I think that this quotation became a very true quotation over the last years. Nowadays, people all over the world use social networks, especially social media, to communicate or trade all over the world. They became very famous because every action and interaction is happening in the very same minute. If you order a book on Amazon in England, but you are in Japan, the seller will still get a notification about your order just some seconds after you placed it. Social networks are also very important in the product of designing, e.g. a new shoe. I saw a report on TV about the Adidas Designer Team. They have laboratories all over the world and still manage to work together hand in hand. If the work in America is done at nighttime, the design and all progresses are forwarded to Europe. In Europe, it is daytime so the work can be continued without any delay.

Social networks bring the world closer together. It is very easy to communicate with business partners even if you are located far away. In some business branches it became very common to hold business meetings online, especially with Skype. You can talk to each other in real time, and thus can make urgent decisions in the blink of an eye. This is very important concerning that some business transactions need such urgent decisions to react to changes in the environment. But Skype also became a very useful tool for everyone. I use it to talk with my family in Germany. I also spoke with my family via Skype when I was in Germany too, because you cannot just call, but also video chat with your partner.

With the expansion of the usage of social networks, the usage and the number of social media has also increased. Millions of people have created a Facebook account, to share their thoughts with friends and families and to stay in contact with them. The same happened to Twitter, many people set up their accounts to tell the people what they are up to or what is just happening. Many musicians or politicians also use social media nowadays, which is ought to bring them closer to people that are interested in following those people.

In my opinion, the world today could not work without social networks like it is working now. Many business processes would take a lot more time, which will affect production process in the end. It would also affect the life of every people. We are used to the usage of social networks every day. If they would be limited or very hard to reach, I think many people would have to change their lifestyle.

Air Bagan survivor tells of terrifying landing

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Air Bagan says it has found the black box after a dramatic Christmas Day crash-landing, as survivors told terrifying tales of escape and expressed disbelief that only two people died.

Details of the accident remain unclear, though the airline and officials have blamed heavy fog for the aircraft's crash into a rice paddy field where it burst into flames. Four foreigners were among 11 people injured.

Australian survivor, Anna Bartsch, on Wednesday described the landing as a fast, very bumpy roller-coaster ride. She recounted looking out the window, seeing flames and racing out to safety.

"It's amazing that the injuries were not more serious," said the 31-year-old. "It could have been much worse."

Air Bagan is sending the black box to Singapore to study the cause of the accident.

Malaysia Open to get elevation as Premier Super Series event in 2014 ? Badminton Feature

Badminton in Malaysia is proceeding in the right direction as the biggest event of the court, Malaysia Open Super Series, has got elevation and now it will be one of the five Premier Super Series events from 2014 edition.

This up-gradation indicates that Badminton World Federation (BWF), the world?s governing body of this sport, seems completely satisfied with the offerings and impressive organising plans of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) which is the governing body for this sport in Malaysia.

Getting the level of a Premier Super Series tournament is nothing short of a mega achievement and the whole credit goes to the efforts of BAM that grabbed the attention of sponsors and played a vital role in taking the standard to this level.

BAM is confident that the upcoming Malaysia Open Super Series 2013, from 15-20 January, will serve as a perfect testing ground for the Premier Super Series event in 2014. The BWF found Malaysia a perfect ground for the commencement of a Premier Super Series tournament and the first edition after getting this status will be held in 2014.

Officials of BAM believe that it will pull attention of all top players in the world as the lucrative prize money and precious ranking points are the main driving forces to bring shuttlers to compete in Malaysia.

Currently, Malaysia Open is one of the seven Super Series Events that are played in a year under the supervision of BWF. From 2014, it will become one of the five Premier Super Series tournaments which will definitely help Malaysian shuttlers to get more opportunities to prove their worth.

Datuk Al Amin Majid, who is BAM?s deputy president, is optimistic that the upcoming Malaysia Open will serve as a testing ground for Premier Super Series event. He is quite optimistic that all top players from around the world will complete in this tournament which is one of the most prestigious events in the arena of Badminton.

He stated, ?We are very happy that Malaysia has finally earned the right to host a Premier event from 2014 onwards and next year?s Malaysian Open will be a good testing ground for us. Although the total prize money will remain at US$400,000, it is still one of the biggest for a Super Series event and we?re looking forward to all the top players coming here.?

He further said, ?I?d like to think that Malaysia is one of the best host in terms of hospitality and we should have no problems attracting the top players.?

Majid said that in the upcoming Malaysia Open, five courts will be used in the qualifying round and first round which will help in completing the matches in timely fashion. From the second round of the tournament, four courts are expected to be used. This will be the last Malaysia Open as a Super Series tournament as the next edition of 2014 will be a Premier Super Series event.

The deputy president of BAM takes pride in saying that Malaysia is one of the best countries to organise such prestigious tournaments when it comes to show hospitality.

Considering all these things, many experts think that giving Premier Super Series standard to Malaysia Open is a right step as the organisers deserve it by having a proven track record of making this tournament quite successful in the past.

Luck, Colts clinch to cap amazing turnaround

Rookie leads team into playoffs a year after team finished 2-14

By DAVE SKRETTA

updated 6:20 p.m. ET Dec. 23, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The expectations placed upon Andrew Luck almost seemed unfair.

Being the heir to Peyton Manning in Indianapolis is heady stuff for a rookie taking the reins of a franchise that won two games last season.

Now, after guiding the Colts back to the playoffs - and breaking Cam Newton's single-season passing record for a first-year player - it's safe to say Luck exceeded just about all of them.

Luck threw for 205 yards Sunday, and his 7-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne on third-and-goal late in the fourth quarter gave the Colts a 20-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. That put them into the playoffs without worrying about anybody else.

"Would we have done it without him?" Colts interim coach Bruce Arians asked. "No."

Luck broke Newton's record of 4,051 yards passing in the second quarter. But it was extending his own rookie record for fourth-quarter comebacks to seven was more important.

The Chiefs had rallied behind Jamaal Charles' 226 yards rushing to tie the game 13-13 heading into the fourth quarter. The Colts' defense stuffed quarterback Brady Quinn on fourth-and-inches to give Luck a chance.

That's all he needed.

After a miserable stretch in which he connected on 1 of 13 passes, the fabulous freshman calmly led Indianapolis (10-5) downfield. He completed a key pass to T.Y. Hilton on third down and made two nice throws to Wayne before hitting the veteran in the back of the end zone.

"We had so many opportunities all game, especially on third down, that we squandered," Wayne said. "We wanted to get that done. That was the opportune time to do it."

Darius Butler returned an interception 32 yards for the Colts' other touchdown, helping them join the 2008 Miami Dolphins as the only teams to win at least 10 games after losing 14 or more the previous season.

Most of those wins have come under Arians, who has filled in admirably while Chuck Pagano underwent treatment for leukemia. Pagano is expected to rejoin the Colts this week.

"Mission accomplished. That's all I can say," Arians said. "Without getting emotional again, knowing that (Pagano) is going to be back Monday, the work week shouldn't be as stressful."

Charles' big day included an 86-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half. It was his second 200-yard game of the season, and came one week after he managed 10 yards on nine carries against Oakland.

"It was fun today, competing out there and doing it while we were trying to come back," Charles said. "It was fun going out there and putting out a performance like that."

Charles joined the Titans' Chris Johnson and former Lions great Barry Sanders as the only players with three runs of 80 or more yards in a season. His third career 200-yard game also set a franchise record, which he had shared with Larry Johnson.

Peyton Hillis added 101 yards on the ground for the Chiefs (2-13), who had 352 yards rushing in a losing effort - the first time that's happened in NFL history.

A big reason why was Quinn, who was just 10 of 22 for 162 yards with two interceptions.

"This game was without a doubt, 100 percent on my shoulders," he said. "You can't play the way I played today and win a football game."

His trouble began with the Chiefs' fifth offensive play, when he threw woefully behind Dexter McCluster - who wasn't even looking for the ball. Butler picked off the pass in stride, taking it untouched to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Kansas City managed a field goal by Ryan Succop, but he missed his next try and the Colts went the other direction to set up the first of Adam Vinatieri's two field goals.

Charles fumbled in the red zone later in the second quarter, and the Colts moved into Vinatieri's range for a 36-yard field goal and a 13-3 halftime lead.

Charles electrified a sparse crowd on the first play of the second half. He angled to the left and then found room down the sideline, cutting back toward the middle of the field and winning a foot-race with the Indianapolis defense for an 86-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs were in position to take the lead later in the third quarter, but Quinn was picked off by Vontae Davis in the end zone. The defense forced a three-and-out and Kansas City was driving again before settling for Succop's tying 47-yard field goal.

The Chiefs got the ball back again late in the fourth quarter, but Quinn was stuffed on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches from the Indianapolis 27.

That turned the ball over to Luck, who completed an 11-yard pass to T.Y. Hilton to convert a third down before he and Wayne won it.

"At times it looked a little bleak," Arians said. "Guys hung in there, made plays when they had to make them. Offensively we struggled, and then put together a drive, like we have all year."

Notes: Chiefs WR Terrance Copper (left knee) and DT Tyson Jackson (left foot) left with injuries. ... Wayne had five catches to become the fifth player in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons. He also became the 14th player to reach 13,000 yards receiving.

Immersive Storytelling for The Lost Children | Filmmaker Magazine

My feature film The Lost Children will have its New York City premiere with the Film Society of Lincoln Center in January, 2013.

The premiere will not be a film screening alone. It is presented by Convergence: Film Society of Lincoln Center, which is an arm of the FSLC devoted to immersive and transmedia storytelling. Like many organizations in New York City, FSLC is reaching out and exploring new storytelling methods. The 50th anniversary of the NYFF included its first ever series of panels on transmedia. This year, the Tribeca FF is accepting basically any type of project. And the IFP recently won a bid to run the upcoming NYC Media Center, which will house a blend of film+art+technology. And fellow Filmmaker contributor Lance Weiler even has a transmedia curriculum at Columbia University now.

Convergence: FSLC is billing this not as a NYC premiere of the movie, but as the NYC premiere of the story world. I love this idea and it?s the first time I?ve seen it. So the premiere is not just about coming to see a film, it?s about coming out for a whole evening of exploring the story world, with the film being one aspect of that exploration.

The premiere will consist of three parts which coincide with three aspects of the story world. In the coming weeks, I?ll be writing articles here about each aspect, and then when it?s over, I?ll contribute a post mortem, sharing what I learned from the whole experience.

Part 1: A live immersive theater experience that places the audience directly into a cult recruitment event. The story involves a cult, and the film is the story of one young woman escaping the cult. The goal here is to use theater to affect the audience directly, and to demonstrate in a visceral, real way, some of the techniques cults use to recruit people. It?s not a play about a recruitment event, it?s an actual recruitment event. I?ll talk more about ideas around immersive theater, empathy, etc. in the article devoted to that.

Part 2: A live lecture and Q&A about the real science aspects of the film. The Lost Children cult believes they are from another world, and soon will leave Earth by way of a UFO hiding within the Tioga Comet. So this section will be lead by a real astronomer or science writer and explore the real scientific aspects of comets and the search for alien life in the universe. As a life-long lover of science, the goal here is to use the fictional elements of my story as a jumping off point to explore real science. The Physics of Star Trek?does the same thing. Plus, many astronomers credit Science Fiction as inspiring their careers in real science. Audience will be allowed to go between Part 1 and Part 2 at will.

Part 3: An interactive screening of the feature film itself. For a long time, I?ve liked the idea of films reacting to each night?s audience, similar to a live performance. I talked about a version of this at UCLA in 2011. We?re trying another variation here. The audience will be allowed to to indicate their feelings in a very non-disruptive manner, and the film will alter itself in reaction. Those who want to just watch a film will be able to do that uninterrupted. But the film they see will be only one variation possible. I?m toying with the ideas of releasing each version of the film when we do VOD. The goal is to experiment with a concept called ?film as software.? Which means basically film taking on some of the characteristics of software, one of those being the ability to react to users in real time. I want to emphasize, this will not be a ?choose your own adventure,? and it will not be an incoherent dive into video art. As I said, those who want to just sit back and watch a (hopefully) good movie, can do so. I think this principle of not forcing people to ?interact? is key in designing any interactive experience and it?s a principle I extend through the entire evening. There are always multiple levels and you can choose the one that suits you best.

Over the next few weeks, I will detail each of these pieces and delve deeper into the whats and the whys. But in this first article, I wanted to walk a bit through the thought process that lead me to do this at all.

I?ve had to think about all of this a lot, and I came up with a couple of things.

Art.

The first and foremost reason for this is that I think it?s very cool and provides a compelling experience for the audience. I came from live theater and have always loved it. I also love the growing movement of immersive theater. And when I sat back and thought about it, all of the most amazing experiences I?ve had over the past few years have been live experiences, some of them immersive. So I think this is simply an amazing idea for an evening, and it gives me the opportunity to create and explore the world around my film in some new and very interesting ways, while moving the audience in some powerful ways.

It also allows me to work on some aspects of transmedia design, such as designing for different levels of interaction. Finally, it gives me the opportunity to collaborate with people across disciplines I never would have imagined. The astronomer, for instance. Likewise, I?ve partnered with The Institute for Art and Olfaction in L.A. to provide a custom scent for the experience. This scent will be used to help cement emotions and memories in the audience?s minds.

Commerce.

I?ve thought about this one for a long time. This kind of event costs money to produce. Any live event does. Can money be made on this? I think ultimately the answer can be yes, with a few qualifications. Just as in movies, there is very little money to be made in theater, unless you are going to stick to some formulas. A musical based on a big Hollywood movie is a good one. From Lion King to How to Train Your Dragon, these shows make money. Then you have Cirque du Soleil, which turned the circus into a kind of narrative acrobatic ball of amazing, and can?t seem to sell tickets fast enough. I?m pretty sure they make a lot of money.

There are productions like Sleep No More. Sleep No More has a lot of repeat business. About half of my immediate circle have been more than once, and I know one person who?s been five times. It?s almost more like a haunted house, or an amusement park model, than a ?theater? model. Now, I don?t know if Sleep No More makes money or not. I?d read early on that it had cost in the millions to mount, and it has to be very expensive to maintain, with the real estate, the constant upkeep, talent, etc.

There are two options for my experience. One would be to use it as a promotional event, driving digital sales of the film, which are much more scalable. Maybe do this event in a few cities like Austin, L.A., Portland, to build buzz. I don?t have a problem with that. No movie is successful without spending money on promotion. And I like the idea of spending that money to create new art, rather than spending it on posters and stuff. And I feel like it?s a good way to stand out in an increasingly crowded landscape.

The other option is the one I?m shooting for first. Templatized live events. Send this whole event on tour. This would mean partnering with live theaters around the country, provide a script for the live portions, a guide to hosting the science portion, plus a copy of the interactive version of the film, similar to what you do with a play. Then arrange some kind of revenue split. In my professional transmedia business, I?ve recently heard a couple of big organizations leaning toward more involved live events as a way to attract customers and give them more reason to leave their home entertainment systems. Even the Discovery Channel has a ?museum? in Times Square which serves as a destination for its viewers coming to NYC. So this isn?t that weird of an idea, really. I?ll explore this more in the upcoming article on live immersive events.

Finally, more and more I don?t silo aspects of my career. Each piece feeds the others. Film feeds software. Software feeds film. Software feeds theater. Theater feeds software. And the more I work in transmedia professionally, the more benefit there is to me using my own projects to incubate ideas. Crazy ideas lead to knowledge I can use on client projects, which leads to income. I don?t consider my client work my ?day job?, but as another part of my overall career. Frankly I find the term ?day job? very out-moded. I like writing software. I like making movies. I like designing live experiences and writing plays. So I am less concerned with each project earning profit, than I am with my career as a whole. Indeed this is nothing new to independent filmmakers, whose first big success may mean more to their careers than to the actual return to their investors.

Next up: Live Immersive Theater

Special thanks Matt Bolish &?Film Society of Lincoln Center, StoryCode, IFP, Lance Weiler, Adam Neuhaus & Julia Pontecorvo @radical.media for always supporting my work. I?ll thank more of you as the articles run on. I?m only at this point due to the constant support of many in the film/theater/Transmedia communities.

Businesses are increasingly conducting interviews via video ? it?s more personal than a phone interview and enables companies to interview non-local job candidates that are unable to travel.

Just like any other interview, though, there are certain things to keep in mind if you want to ace it. Adding the variable of Internet connection to the mix, Skype might even give you more to prepare for!

Here are four tips to help you rock your next Skype interview:

1. Pay attention to your background.

Speaking to an interviewer through Skype means inviting them into your environment. Not only do you want it to look good on camera, but you also want it to reflect well on yourself.

Keep it simple, but not boring.

?I would stay away from a room that?s distracting, with funky colors or gaudy wallpaper,? says Megan Morini, assistant director and business consultant at the University of Miami?s career center.

Framing a bookshelf or desk behind you is a great way to add depth to the image your interviewer will see. Just be sure to clean up all clutter and take out the trash! There?s no reason a potential employer should see Solo cups lying around.

The goal for your interview is to look professional, even though you?re at home. Be conscious of any inappropriate posters you have on the wall behind you or explicit books on your bookshelf. They may have been a gag gift from your sorority sisters, but employers have no way to know that.

While you may be tempted to interview sitting on the couch or bed, you?ll definitely want to avoid this. You?ll look far more professional sitting at a desk or table.

?What I ended up doing was going to a Barnes & Noble caf? that had free Wi-Fi to have the interview,? said Elizabeth Tompkins, a senior at the College of William and Mary. ?With that simple change of scene I felt more professional. I?m sure it looked better too, not having the background of my dorm room in the video feed.?

2. Wear an office-appropriate outfit.

Just because your interview is being conducted in a less conventional way, this doesn?t mean you?re allowed to stay in your pajamas. Because your interviewer can physically see you, wear what you normally would to an interview. While this varies depending on your field, a nice blouse with a blazer is always a solid option.

?I would err on the side of caution,? says Morini. ?Don?t wear anything too bright or busy. I?d stick with a black or cream-colored top.?

Don?t go halfway with your outfit, either. It can be super tempting to dress for success on the top (what can be seen on camera) and wear casual shorts or sweats on the bottom. But this could end up biting you ? you never know if you?ll have to get up at some point!

Your best bet is to dress like you would for a Monday morning at the office.

3. Study the lighting.

Your Skype interview is, essentially, your primetime moment. You?re the producer AND the star.

?Filming? conditions should be as close to perfect as you can make them so you can look like your fabulous self to your potential employer. If you position your camera in front of a window or other light source, your face will be a dark silhouette on screen. On the other hand, bright overhead or fluorescent lights can wash you out.

The best lighting is natural sunlight, but don?t worry if you?re being interviewed after dark or on a rainy day. Any light source in front of you will do.

A lamp on either side of your computer/webcam will help avoid looking like you?re under a spotlight, and you can try covering your light source(s) with a cloth to soften the light.

To test out your lighting before your interview, Morini suggests having a practice interview.

?Have a Skype call with a friend, parent or career adviser [from your campus?s career center],? she says. ?You can try out your lighting, your background, your Internet feed.?

Just like doing a dry run before an in-person interview to practice getting there, a test Skype call can really pay off.

4. Prepare for technical difficulties.

Internet connections can be spotty, so always come up with a backup plan. Skype can be plagued by technical difficulties and can cause audio lag and pixelated video ? especially when the connection is bad.

If your Wi-Fi is super unreliable, use an ethernet cable to plug in so you don?t lose service in the middle of your interview.

As much as you may love your laptop, it?s still a piece of technology and doesn?t know not to die during an interview. Keep it plugged in to avoid any potential battery disasters.

Close all unnecessary programs ? not only will they be distracting, but they?ll also slow down your computer?s processing (interfering with your video feed) and drain the battery quicker.

And make sure to keep your cell phone handy.

?Make sure you have a contact phone number for your interviewer,? Morini says. ?If something goes wrong, you can give them a call and go right into a phone interview instead.?

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Newtown's children were showered with gifts Saturday ? tens of thousands of teddy bears, Barbie dolls, soccer balls and board games ? and those are only some of the tokens of support from around the world for the town in mourning.

Just a little over a week ago, 20 children and six school employees were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, attacked the school, then killed himself. Police don't know what set off the massacre.

Days before Christmas, funerals were still being held Saturday, the last of those whose schedules were made public, according to the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association. A service was held in Utah for 6-year-old Emilie Parker. Others were held in Connecticut for Josephine Gay, 7, and Ana Marquez-Greene, 6.

All of Newtown's children were invited to Edmond Town Hall, where they could choose a toy. Bobbi Veach, who was fielding donations at the building, reflected on the outpouring of gifts from toy stores, organizations and individuals around the world.

"It's their way of grieving," Veach said. "They say, 'I feel so bad, I just want to do something to reach out.' That's why we accommodate everybody we can."

The United Way of Western Connecticut said the official fund for donations had $2.8 million in it on Saturday. Others sent envelopes stuffed with cash to pay for coffee at the general store, and a shipment of cupcakes arrived from a gourmet bakery in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The Postal Service reported a six-fold increase in mail in the town and set up a unique post office box to handle it. The parcels come decorated with rainbows and hearts drawn by schoolchildren.

Some letters arrived in packs of 26 identical envelopes ? one for each family of the children and staff killed or addressed to the "First Responders" or just "The People of Newtown." One card arrived from Georgia addressed to "The families of 6 amazing women and 20 beloved angels." Many contained checks.

"This is just the proof of the love that's in this country," Postmaster Cathy Zieff said.

Peter Leone said he was busy making deli sandwiches and working the register at his Newtown General Store when he got a phone call from Alaska. It was a woman who wanted to give him her credit card number.

"She said, 'I'm paying for the next $500 of food that goes out your door,'" Leone said. "About a half hour later another gentleman called, I think from the West Coast, and he did the same thing for $2,000."

At the town hall building, the basement resembled a toy store, with piles of stuffed penguins, dolls, games, and other fun gifts. All the toys were inspected and examined by bomb-sniffing dogs before being sorted and put on card tables. The children could choose whatever they wanted.

Jugglers entertained the children, a dunk tank was set up outside and the crowd of several hundred parents and children sang an enthusiastic rendition of "Happy Birthday" to one child. A man dressed as Santa Claus was in attendance, and high school students were offering arts and crafts such as face painting and caricatures.

Newtown resident Amy Mangold, director of the local Parks and Recreation department, attended with her 12-year-old daughter, Cory. She acknowledged that most people here could afford to buy their own gifts but said "this means people really care about what's happening here. They know we need comfort and want to heal."

She pointed to two people across the room. "Look at that hug, that embrace. This is bringing people together. Some people haven't been getting out since this happened. It's about people being together. I see people coming together and healing."

Many people have placed flowers, candles and stuffed animals at makeshift memorials that have popped up all over town. Others are stopping by the Edmond Town Hall to drop off food, toys or cash. About 60,000 teddy bears were donated, said Ann Benoure, a social services caseworker who was working at the town hall.

"There's so much stuff coming in," said Tom Mahoney, the building administrator who's in charge of handling gifts. "To be honest, it's a bit overwhelming; you just want to close the doors and turn the phone off."

Mahoney said the town of some 27,000 with a median household income of more than $111,000 plans to donate whatever is left over to shelters or other charities.

Sean Gillespie of Colchester, who attended Sandy Hook Elementary, and Lauren Minor, who works at U.S. Foodservice in Norwich, came from Calvary Chapel in Uncasville with a car filled with food donated by U.S. Foodservice. But they were sent elsewhere because the refrigerators in Newtown were overflowing with donations.

"We'll find someplace," Gillespie said. "It won't go to waste."

In addition to the town's official fund, other private funds have been set up. Former Sandy Hook student Ryan Kraft, who once baby-sat Lanza, set up a fund with other alumni that has collected almost $150,000. It is earmarked for the Sandy Hook PTA.

Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel is raising money for a memorial to the victims. He said one man wrote a check for $52,000 for the project.

Several colleges, including the University of Connecticut, have set up scholarship funds to pay for the educations of students at Sandy Hook and the relatives of the victims.

Town officials have not decided yet what to do with all the money. A board of Newtown community leaders is being established to determine how it is most needed and will be best utilized, said Isabel Almeida with the local United Way, which has waived all its administrative fees related to the fund.

She said some have wondered about building a new school for Sandy Hook students if the town decides to tear the school down, but that decision has not been made.

And while the town is grateful for all the support, Almeida said, it has no more room for those gifts. Instead, she encouraged people to donate to others in memory of the Sandy Hook victims.

"Send those teddy bears to a school in your community or an organization that serves low-income children, who are in need this holiday season, and do it in memory of our children," she said.
